The 5 themes of the civic exam: what to revise

Of the 40 civic-exam questions, 28 test factual knowledge across five official themes: the values of the Republic, the institutions, rights and duties, history and geography, and life in society.

These five themes are the ones you can revise in advance, unlike the 12 situational questions. So this is where theme-by-theme practice pays off most.

The values of the Republic and the institutions cover how the state works, the motto, secularism (laïcité), the symbols and the core principles. Rights and duties cover what living in France involves in practice, on both sides.

History and geography place France in time and space; life in society covers everyday life, shared rules and living together. The Livret du citoyen is the official reference for this content.
